Valley Firefighters Extinguish Fire off Pines Ave at 1st Ave
Fire Started Inside Dryer

Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units were dispatched around 3 p.m. this afternoon to a report of a small one story residence structure fire on First Avenue just off of Pines. The homeowner called 911 to report their dryer had caught on fire. All residents evacuated the home. There was a bird still in the home when crews arrived.
Units arriving included VL 8, VE13, VE1, VE15, VE9, V21, V22, V31, VL10, VE2, V43, and AM. Crews arrived to find a dryer fire that had extended into the walls. A column of smoke and flames was visible on their approach. The fire was quickly upgraded and more crews were added. Water lines were quickly deployed and working together, crews worked quickly to hit the fire with an offensive approach. Crews also pulled the ceiling and quickly contained the flames. The interior and exterior was searched for additional hot spots. V31 completed a 360 of the house and safety was established. The fire attack was aggressive and crews had it under control and out in just over 10 minutes.
Sadly, the bird did not survive.
The investigator on scene ruled the fire accidental. The cause was an internal fire within the dryer.
Most appliance fires start internally or inside the appliance. Spokane Valley Fire wants to remind people to clean their dryers regularly. Don’t just clean the lint filter, lint also builds up inside and around the motor as well which can ignite. Remove the panel that is located in the front of most dryers. It usually can easily be removed for cleaning. Once that is off, vacuum inside that area. OR, have your dryer serviced regularly to remove the lint.
