SVFD CREWS RESPOND TO CAR FIRE NEAR 1 STORY RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE
CAR IN CARPORT CATCHES FIRE
****************************************************************
Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) responded around 9:30 a.m. to the 10400 block of East Mission Avenue for a reported structure fire. Callers to 911 believed a house was on fire, seeing large flames and black smoke. Crews arrived to find a car on fire under an awning about 1 foot from the garage and starting to spread to the building.
The fire was knocked down within the first 10 minutes of being called into 911. The fire was contained to the car and carport and did not extend into the garage or attic.
Calling 911 quickly helped keep this fire contained to minimal damage. This is the second fire today in a matter of hours. Last week Spokane Valley Fire responded to 19 fires, 1 car fire, 29 car collisions, and 1 car versus pedestrian collision. SVFD asks citizens to please practice winter fire safety and driver safety as we continue through the remainder of 2021 and this holiday season. More home fires happen in the winter months than any other time of year.
Understanding Fire Hydrant Placement:
The Spokane Valley Fire Department has a blend of hydrant coverage throughout its borders similar to all fire departments in Spokane County. Areas of good fire hydrant density will facilitate quickly obtaining a water source upon a fire engine’s arrival. In some areas of the district hydrants are placed much further apart.
Fire Department across Spokane County, including SVFD, account for this variation of hydrant availability by carrying a minimum of 500 gallons of immediately available water on fire trucks. Firefighter training scenarios include the efficient transporting of water to fires from distant locations. Established relationships with neighboring fire districts brings further water supply when in a rural area where supply is limited. This mutual aid allows fire districts the opportunity to utilize water tenders from neighboring fire districts to help fight bordering fires. SVFD has Automatic Aid and Mutual Aid relationships with neighboring Fire Departments surrounding the entire SVFD Fire District.
For example, last week’s fire in the rural area of Otis Orchards, fire hydrants are sparsely located. In this situation it takes more time to get water to the fire. It is very important for these rural areas to have their home addresses clearly displayed and snow or other debris around any existing fire hydrants cleared to make access during emergencies quick and easy and time is not lost.
