SVFD CPR PRACTICE NOW INCLUDES LUCAS 3 DEVICE
EFFORT ANTICIPATES IMPROVED RESUSCITATION OUTCOMES
***********************************************
Spokane Valley Fire is taking steps to advance CPR practices through the use of a Lucas 3 Device. This device takes over in a CPR situation and continues the efforts started by First Responders or citizen bystanders.
At the Board of Commissioners Meeting, the EMS Team demonstrated the Lucas 3 device they will be evaluating for improved patient outcomes, operational efficiencies, and resource utilization.
The Lucas 3 device will:
- Improve the quality of chest compressions
- Increase the ETCO2 levels
- Provide for prolonged resuscitation attempts
- Provide consistent compressions during patient movement and transport
- Remove the need for rotating personnel on chest compressions

SVFD also is utilizing Electronic Health Reporting technology to electronically transmit patient care information to AMR and the hospital. This is amazing technology that allows patient information to transfer at an accelerated pace ahead of the patient to AMR and the hospital for improved patient outcomes. This means the hospital will have information before the patient arrives and will be better able to anticipate needed procedures upon arrival.
SFVD is already a leader nationally in its ability to save lives in jeopardy from cardiac arrest. The nationally used Utstein Formula of Survival to measure Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates ranks SVFD’s rate at 42.9%. The National Average for survival based on this standard is 33.3%. Washington State has an average of 42.1%.
These percentages increase when bystander or citizen help and intervention (CPR or AED) is incorporated. Based on the Utstein bystander survival with bystander intervention, those numbers improve and look like this:
SVFD – 75%
Washington State – 47.5%
National – 37.3%
The SVFD will continue to research industry innovations for life saving techniques that will improve their ability to save lives as a First Responder in their community.
