When Kaila Jones’ job was eliminated in 2014, the single mother decided to go back to school to put herself in a better position to support her two young children with a good paying job.

“Not working and going to school was very scary for me,” she explained. “There isn’t a safety net and money is very tight. I am extremely grateful for the support I received from the Spokane Valley Fire Department scholarship fund, which has helped me pay everyday bills not covered by grants and loans.”

Jones lives within the SVFD service area and attends Spokane Community College (SCC). She is precisely the type of non-traditional student the SVFD Employees’ Scholarship Fund serves – individuals retooling their skills to move back into the workforce by pursuing a vocational or technical degree through the Community Colleges of Spokane.

Voluntary payroll deductions from SVFD employees are the main funding source for the scholarships. Since the fund’s inception in 2011 by a group of firefighters, 27 scholarships have been provided to SVFD residents totaling just under $70,000.

Kaila Jones will graduate in December 2016 with an AAS in Accounting and an AA in Business. She completed her internship this past summer with Spokane County and hopes to move into a position in the Treasurer’s Office after graduation.
