SPOKANE VALLEY FIREFIGHTERS LOCAL 876 RAISING MONEY FOR KIDS COATS
LAST YEAR FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO BUY 425 NEW COATS
**************************************************** Donations are being collected for this year’s Spokane Valley Firefighters Operation Warm! Last year firefighters gave roughly 425 brand-new winter coats to area children who didn’t have one.
Coats were delivered to the following elementary schools for distribution:
- Broadway
- Opportunity
- Trent
- Trentwood
- Orchard Center
- Ness
“This still leaves a lot of kids without a coat in Central, East, and West Valley school districts,” said Firefighter Scott Niebuhr. “There are 20 other elementary schools with thousands of students that still need winter coats each year in the Valley.”
For the 2018-2019 school year there were 22,678 students enrolled in the Central Valley, East Valley, and West Valley school districts. 10,623 of those students were classified as Low income based on family income by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), with another 622 students classified as homeless. At Trent Elementary School alone, over 88% of the 560 students qualified for free or reduced lunch.
This year it’s hoped to extend Operation Warm to more elementary schools served by SVFD Firefighters. We are looking for any businesses, organizations, and individuals who would like to help.
A $20 donation buys 1 Spokane Valley child a brand-new coat. You can donate online through the Operation Warm website, www.OperationWarm.org/Spokane-Valley
Donations of new, un-used winter weight coats are being accepted as well, and can be dropped off at any Spokane Valley fire station. The program currently isn’t equipped to include used coats.

Coats will be collected through the end of November with distribution beginning around November 1.
