SPOKANE VALLEY FIRE RESPONDS TO SHOP FIRE

**********************************************

Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units were dispatched at 9:32 p.m. to a 24 by 24 shop fire on 13200 block of East Fourth Avenue. Valley Engine 7 was the first to arrive at 9:36 pm, they assessed the situation and determined the fire was defensive. Smoke and flames were coming from several openings in the structure. Water was applied to the fire from outside of the structure do to the size of the fire and fire development. Once the fire was under control, Valley Fire crews made entry to search for occupants, none were found.  The fire was under control at 9:40 pm.

The shop was a total loss and regrettably a few chickens and other animals died in the fire. The good news is, no one was injured. Fire crews from Station 1, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were dispatched as well as Spokane Valley PD for traffic control.  All but two apparatus were back in service by 10:30 pm.

The source of ignition is under investigation. At this time some items that could not be ruled out as a possible cause of the fire are a heat lamp coming in contact with combustible material, a fan motor failing, or an electrical connection failure.

The Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind residents that electricity can be a competent ignition source. Take some time and evaluate your electrical system, to include lighting, ventilation, and heating/cooling appliances. Make sure all electrical plugs are secure and cool to the touch and ventilation fans are clean and inspected regularly.
