SPOKANE VALLEY FIRE RESPONDS TO HOME FIRE IN LIBERTY LAKE
LIGHTNING POTENTIALLY RESPONSIBLE
**********************************************
Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units were dispatched around 1 p.m. to the 24000 block of East Sinto Lane in Liberty Lake to the report of a home fire potentially caused by a lightning strike. A neighbor called 911 reporting the fire and alerted the homeowner. The occupants were all evacuated to safety. Crews could see smoke and fire as they approached the location and upgraded the fire to a working fire which dispatched more fire crews to help with the response.
When crews arrived, they found 3 neighbors with hoses spraying the area where the fire started. Neighbors said they saw lightning strike at the back of the house where the fire originated. The fire was quickly knocked down and the roof line and ceiling opened to check for any extension. Crews helped to ventilate smoke from the house as well.
There was no power at the house and the neighboring cul-de-sac also had lost power. Avista crews arrived to help re-instate the power after safety conditions were established.
Approximately 5 engines, 1 Ladder, a safety officer, 2 Battalion Chiefs, and 2 SVFD investigators responded to this incident.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department would like everyone to keep the extreme temperatures in the forefront even though cooler conditions are in the forecast. Thunder and Lightning is also in the forecast, should lightning strike your home, evacuate the premises and call 911 immediately. Hot and dry conditions continue to be a threat to our community, and to our Firefighter health who must wear fire protection gear and equipment that adds 50 to 100 pounds to their body weight. Keeping hydrated is extremely difficult under these conditions.
