SPOKANE VALLEY FIRE IS ON SCENE AT A HOME FIRE ON BEST ROAD
CREWS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE NIGHT TO PUT OUT HOTSPOTS
**********************************************
Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) firefighters responded at 2:45 p.m. December 9 to a report of smoke and flames seen at a home in the 4200 block of N Best Road. Callers to 911 indicated flames could be seen in a neighboring home.
SVFD Battalion Chief V22 could see a large plume of smoke from Sullivan Road on his way to the scene. He upgraded the fire to a working fire which brought more apparatus to help fight the fire. Upon arrival, the home was fully involved with 30-foot flame lengths. Fire crews had the home under control within minutes and then proceeded to further manage the fire.
Ten engines, 2 ladders, 2 Battalion Chiefs (V21 and V22), 1 Safety Officer (V31), 1 Investigator (V44), and 1 PIO (V14), responded from Spokane Valley Fire. Auto and Mutual aid was received from Spokane County Fire District 8 (SCFD8) and City of Spokane Fire (SFD). In total approximately 50 Firefighters were on hand fighting the fire. Avista also arrived on scene.
Crews are fighting the fire from the north, south, and inside of the structure. The roof is becoming precarious and failing and extra caution is being taken by the fire crews. As night approached, crews implemented night procedures to help with visibility. It is anticipated that crews will be on scene throughout the remainder of the night putting out any remaining hot spots, checking for additional heat sources, and cleaning up the area. This was a very difficult fire to put out quickly because of the layout of the home, contents, and areas that were difficult to access. Crews fought the fire initially from a defensive strategy and then moved to an offensive strategy on the Bravo exterior maintaining an offensive on the main structure.
Seven residents were evacuated safely. A total of 10 residents lived in the home though some were not present during the time of the fire. The owner of the home smelled smoke and then alerted the others to evacuate. Red Cross was called in to offer services to the residents.
No injuries were noted to civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind residents to practice winter safety. Do not place heaters near flammable materials and stay in the room if you light a candle. With holiday decorations, make sure to not overload outlets and to keep heat sources away from Christmas trees.
