SPOKANE VALLEY FIRE AWARDED INJURY AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION GRANT
GRANT MONEY WILL BE USED FOR A PILOT PROGRAM FOR YOUTH HELMET SAFETY
**********************************************************
Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) received another grant that will help further their goal of making the SVFD Fire District safe for kids. SVFD received the grant money from the East Region EMS and Trauma Care Council. The grant will help to pilot a program to provide school-age children with a multi-sport helmet for those who do not have one available.
“Twenty percent of bicycle collisions happen in our jurisdiction. Bicycle safety continues to be a national concern with bicycling being the leading cause of recreational sports injuries treated in emergency departments,” said Deputy Chief of Prevention, Greg Rogers. “A helmet is a very effective device that can prevent the occurrence of serious brain injuries and death.”
SVFD’s pilot program will include the fitting and delivery of youth multi-sport helmets, as well as partnering with local school districts (Central Valley, East Valley, and West Valley), MultiCare Valley Hospital, and Providence Medical other agency partners including Safe Kids Spokane, and local bicycle and sports equipment shops to identify high-risk youth in need of helmets.
Youth and their families will be trained on the proper use, maintenance, and fitting of helmets.
“The goal is to educate youth and their families about injury prevention and create a safer community,” said Community Risk Reduction Specialist, Caroline Kusher. “Our goal is to reduce the risk of head injuries and fatalities with the helmet safety pilot program.”
Helmet coupons will be issued for redemption at monthly helmet fittings which will be scheduled every month starting in late Spring and ending in early Fall. Special invitation helmet cards will be given to individuals throughout the year at education events, special events or when a child is seen riding without a helmet.
