HOUSE FIRE IN THE PONDEROSA
***********************************************
Spokane Valley, Wash. – Spokane County Fire District Eight and the Spokane Valley Fire Department responded at 9:49 PM July 23, 2019 to a house fire in the 10300 block of East 44th Ave. A resident of the Ponderosa neighborhood reported hearing a loud boom, when he went outside to investigate, he saw the fire in the garage of the neighbor’s home. He called 911 to report the fire and alerted the sole occupant of the home and told her to evacuate.
Engine 84 (Fire District Eight) was the first to arrive on scene. The officer reported smoke coming from the attached garage and upgraded the call to a working fire. Spokane Valley Fire Engine 7 was second on scene, they took a hose line from Engine 84, made entry into the garage, and extinguish the fire. Because of the nature the fire, crews remained on scene until 1:00 AM, ensuring that the fire was out and no other homes in the area were affected. Avista was called to the scene to disconnect the electricity and shut off the natural gas. Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies assisted traffic control. No injuries were reported.
The loud boom that was reported by the 911 caller, was caused by lightning striking a tree. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The lightning strike cannot be ruled out as the cause at this time. There were signs of an electrical event at the fire scene that will need further investigation.
You should always remain indoors during thunderstorms and windstorms. These types of events are incredibly dangerous. If you see power lines down or a lightning strike near your home, stay clear of the area and call 911. A downed power line should always be treated as if it were energized.
