FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO WOMAN IN THE SPOKANE RIVER
**********************************************
Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units responded at 3:05 this afternoon to a report of a possible drowning in the Spokane River by Sullivan Bridge.
A SVFD inspector was in the area and was flagged down by a bystander and directed to the location of the patient. The inspector and a bystander worked to remove the patient from the river and immediately began CPR. Another bystander had seen the patient face down in the water, dove in and swam with the patient to the water’s edge. Additional SVFD units took over patient care. The patient was described as a mid 30’s female and transported to a local hospital. Her current condition is unknown at this time. The immediate implementation of resuscitation attempts likely contributed to the patient regaining a pulse.
A total of nine SVFD units responded to the call, including the Special Operations Swift Water Rescue crews.
SVFD would like to remind everybody that is mandatory to wear a life jacket anytime a person recreates on the Spokane River. Even though the water levels have dropped , the current can still be deceptively strong.
