Firefighters Extinguish Hilltop Blaze
Brush Fire Scorches Part of Dishman Hills Natural Area
**********************************************
Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) firefighters were dispatched at 9pm tonight for a report of a fire near the 8000 block of Appleway Blvd, possibly in the Dishman Hills. A 911 caller stated there was a fire alongside the roadway, up in hills, near the CarMax dealership.
Firefighters on the first arriving apparatus from Station 1 found a 100×100 foot fire moving slowly through the grass and trees approximately 500 feet uphill on a 35degree slope within the boundaries of the Dishman Hills Natural Area. Firefighters hiked in from Appleway, laying hoselines along the way using a ‘progressive wildland pack’ and wetline the fire to limit spread. Additional firefighters from the City of Spokane and the Dept. of Natural Resources responded as automatic aid, and assisted with digging a trail around the fire, further containing the blaze. The fire was 100% contained at 11:15pm. No structures were threatened; however staff at Park Place Retirement (511 S. Park) were notified of the incident due to proximity.
This evening a total of eight fire vehicles and four command vehicles responded, staffed by a total of 25 firefighters, to include one brush truck from our automatic aid partners in the City of Spokane, and three brush engines from DNR.
There were no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters. Final estimates placed the fire at 250 x 300 feet in size. The cause of the fire is under a joint investigation by DNR and SVFD.
Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind our citizens that a burn ban remains in effect in Spokane County and that unauthorized open burning and recreational fires are restricted. If you have any questions, before lighting any fire, call your local agency first.
