Independence Day Celebration

Important 4th of July Information

This will be the 19th year that fireworks have been banned in the Spokane Valley, Millwood, Liberty Lake and the unincorporated areas of Spokane County. In previous years, firefighters responded to several fires and injuries caused by fireworks. Since that time, emergency responses associated with fireworks have dropped dramatically.

In the City of Spokane, fireworks-related fires dropped from an annual average of 104 in the ten years prior to the ban to an average of 4 in the ten years after the ban. In a similar manner, fireworks-caused injuries dropped from an annual average of 29 to 4. During the 2010 fireworks reporting period of June 28 to July 6, Spokane hospitals treated 2 injuries and Spokane Fire Department responded to 3 fireworks-caused fires.

Safe and sane fireworks were really never “Safe-and-Sane”. Several thousand injuries are still reported every year. Injuries received from fireworks include burns, amputated body parts, hearing loss, and even death.

All it takes is someone misusing fireworks to cause a serious accident or fire. Millions of dollars in property loss happen each year in the week before and after the 4th of July. Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind the citizens that fireworks are illegal in Spokane Valley, Millwood, Liberty Lake and the unincorporated parts of Spokane County.

Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind the citizens that it is illegal to possess, sell, ignite, or discharge any type of fireworks in the City of Spokane Valley, Spokane County, Millwood, and Liberty Lake.
