Community Emergency Response Team Program

The Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) supports the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.  This program follows the national CERT curriculum and includes two paths:

  1. An initial class for citizens who have not completed a previous class.  The CERT curriculum is taught by SVFD uniformed personnel one night a week for 8 weeks with one class in the spring and one in the fall.
  2. The continuing education training is for those citizens who have completed a CERT class.  It is taught one night a month during March, April, May, September, October and November, along with a disaster drill during the spring. Continuing CERT education and refresher training is coordinated by SVFD personnel.  Before a citizen can participate in this program or transfers from another program, they must complete a background check conducted by the Spokane County Department of Emergency Management.

Currently, interested citizens who have completed the initial CERT training and make a commitment to participating in continuing education are eligible to participate in one of two teams that are utilized by SVFD to provide support services during significant weather events, community festivals and as a component of community and Department disaster preparedness.

Persons interested in participating in initial CERT training may call the Spokane Valley Fire Department at 509.928.1700 or email us using this form.

Skill Center

The Spokane Valley Fire Department partnered with the Spokane Schools Skill Center to instruct the Fire Science class. These instructors, during their off duty days, are contracted with the Skills Center and are not funded by the department. These instructors hold classes daily according to the school district calendar and cover as many faucets of the fire service giving these high school juniors and seniors a good overview of what to expect as a volunteer or career member in the fire service.
