Pension Board

The 41.18 Pension Board is a Board that oversees the retirement allowances and medical bills of all 41.18 and 41.18/41.26 personnel.  They also process payment of qualified medical bills for personnel of the 41.26 Pension System.

The Board consists of 5 members who include the Chairman of Board of Fire Commissioners, County Treasurer, County Auditor and 2 regular or retired firefighters.  The firefighters are elected by secret ballot of the retired firefighters.  See RCW 41.18.015.

Pension Board Policies

The pension board is governed by Chapter 41.18 of the Revised Code of Washington. The Spokane Valley Fire Department maintains also maintains a 41.18 Policy Manual.

Pension Systems

41.18 Pension System
Personnel hired prior to March 1, 1970.  Their retirement is paid entirely by the local pension fund.

41.26 (LEOFF I) Pension System
Personnel hired between March 1, 1970 and October 1, 1977.  Their retirement is paid entirely by the State of Washington Retirement System.

41.18/41.26 Pension System
Personnel eligible for BOTH 41.18 AND 41.26 (LEOFF I) are eligible for both retirement systems.  The difference between 41.18 and 41.26 retirement is paid by the District.

41.26 (LEOFF II) Pension System
Personnel hired after October 1, 1977.  Their retirement is paid entirely by the State of Washington Retirement System.

Currently, the Department has 2 active firefighters that are members of the Leoff I 41.26 pension system. The remainder of the Department firefighters are members of the Leoff II pension system.
